Bittrex wins permission to challenge treatment of unclaimed crypto assets

A Bermuda liquidation dispute raises questions about customer ownership and the handling of balances left unclaimed.

The Privy Council granted permission to appeal on 14 October 2026 in a dispute over unclaimed customer tokens held by a digital-asset exchange in liquidation. This permits a challenge; it does not decide who owns the assets.

According to the official case summary, liquidators sought approval to distribute unclaimed balances as surplus. The Bermuda courts rejected that approach: the Court of Appeal treated assets in Standard Hosted Wallets as beneficially owned by customers and upheld the admission of recorded customer claims without further proof.

The dispute raises questions about wallet terms, asset ownership and insolvency administration. No Privy Council merits judgment or hearing date appears on the reviewed case page.
