Republic debate returns alongside questions about Jamaica’s final court
The Justice Minister sought renewed parliamentary engagement; the speech did not itself change the Constitution.
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck called on MPs on 10 June to revisit the republic proposal previously tabled in 2024. He urged discussion of amendments and a renewed parliamentary process to remove the British monarch as head of state.
The same speech raised the separate question of Jamaica’s final appellate court and proposed public discussion through constitutional town halls. The Minister also referred to possible constitutional recognition for institutions including the Public Defender and electoral administration.
The important legal distinction is between advocating a constitutional design and completing the required change. This source records a minister’s proposals and invitation to consensus; it does not record a successful referendum, an enacted republic amendment or a replacement final court.
Complete official report of the 10 June Sectoral Debate reviewed, published 12 June. Policy speech only. No assertion is made that any proposal described here had completed its constitutional passage by the reporting cut-off.
